Editing your home and life of toxic items can be daunting!  My health journey for the past decade has opened my eyes to those toxins all around me.  Slowly over time, I swapped out those harmful items with something natural, sustainable, and good for both me and the environment.  It was easy and I feel better! Join me as we go from room to room in your home to identify those harmful items and replace them with natural solutions.

Let’s start in the kitchen, the heart of your home.  It’s a place where people gather and the spot to prep your meals.  Food is the foundation of our health.  Healthy and nourishing food helps feed our cells so our bodies can thrive.  Sometimes you can be eating the right foods; however, your storage and cooking items can leach forever chemicals into your food and thus your body.

Easy Swaps:

  • Plastic containers and single-use bags: Swap out these for glass containers, mason jars, silicone reusable pouches, or bags.
  • Plastic bottles: Swap out these for metal or glass drinkware.  Invest in a good water filter and stop buying plastic water bottles.
  • Plastic Straws: Swap these out for stainless steel or other reusable straws.
  • Cookware: Most cookware on the market is coated with Teflon or other toxic non-stick surfaces.  These often contain Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are part of a large group of lab-made chemicals known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).  These chemicals don’t break down and are referred to as “forever chemicals”.  Studies have shown it to be a health risk (cancer-causing) and stay in the environment and in our bodies for a long time.   Swap these out for stainless steel, cast iron, and PFOA/PFAS-free items.
  • Cleaning Products: We want our kitchen to be clean, safe, and without harsh, synthetic, chemical-ridden toxic cleaning products.  Replacing your surface cleaners, floor cleaners, dishwashing detergent, and more with natural alternatives goes a long way in reducing your family’s toxic load.  Try a simple swap for a natural alternative. dōTERRA has several options: abode Cleaner Concentrate, abode Foaming Hand Wash with Citrus Bloom, abode Dishwasher Pods, abode Dishwashing Soap, abode Oil, Purify Oil, On Guard Oil, Lemon, or any citrus oil for cleaning abilities.  Feel free to contact me for my go-to natural solutions in the kitchen.

Let’s move on to the laundry room.  Simplify your laundry routine and make the switch to natural products.  Have you ever walked down the street you live on and could smell who’s doing laundry?  Those toxic chemicals fill the air and take my breath away (not in a good way!).

  • You will want a good laundry detergent that is safe and effective.  Commercialized laundry detergents contain harmful toxins.  Those can be absorbed into our skin and our lungs.  Try a simple swap for a natural alternative.  dōTERRA has two options.  On Guard® Laundry Detergent or the abode Laundry Pods.
  • Fabric Softeners and Scent Beads come in many different scents.  Did you know that most lavender-scented fabric softeners do not contain any lavender?  They use chemicals to give you the impression that you are immersed in a field of lavender.   Try a simple swap for a natural alternative use a wool dryer ball. simply place a few drops of your essential oil of choice on the wool, toss it in the dryer with your clothes, and you’re done! The more oil you use, the stronger the scent will be on your clothes.
  • Natural DIY Cleaning Items: glass spray bottles, white vinegar, Castile soap, baking soda, and water.  Keep these items on hand and you are on your way to reducing your toxic load, naturally.

Let’s move on to the bathroom and focus on the basics. Our morning routine has the potential for our bodies to be exposed to over 150 toxic chemicals.  The first thing you should do is look at the products you’re using on a daily basis—things like toothpaste, deodorant, moisturizer, and cosmetics. Read the labels and check the ingredients. If you’re wondering whether a specific product meets your standards, there are some great apps out there that allow you to scan the product to get more information about its safety. You use these products every single day, so you need to be aware of what’s in them.  Your skin is your largest organ, and everything that you’re exposing yourself to—including lotion, perfume, shampoo, and conditioner—is going to be absorbed through your skin. Watch out for ingredients like aluminum and parabens.

Try a simple swap of choice with our personal skin care products and encourage you to check out the deodorant, skin care lines, toothpaste, and mouthwash.  You will be able to find a good fit for both you and your family.

Let’s move on to the bedroom. It’s a place where we spend time to restore health and is probably the number one thing we can do for ourselves is get the proper amount of sleep.  Adults need at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night, while teenagers and children need even more!

  • How is your mattress & pillow?  These two items are the foundation for a good night's sleep. Investing in a good quality mattress and pillow will make you feel more comfortable and more relaxed.  It’s an important investment for your health and well-being.
  • What is your room temperature?  Studies have shown that a cooler sleep environment helps promote a better night’s sleep. Try adjusting your thermostat a few degrees cooler at night than during the day. Are your sheets and bedding contain a breathable and cooling material?  Natural fiber bedding supports our body temperature. I love fabrics made from sustainable bamboo.
  • Is there too much light in the room? Some people need total darkness to sleep.  Having black-out curtains, placing electrical tape over those gadgets with lights, or wearing a sleep mask can help support the body to rest.
  • Essential oils and supplements can help promote a restful night.  I love having a diffuser in my bedroom.  I can add essential oils to the diffuser to help stimulate and wake me up and to help calm me down.   I love creating a roller ball blend of my favorite essential oils and rolling on onto the bottoms of my feet, pulse points, and back of my neck.   I’ll place a few essential oils in a spray bottle and mist my bedding for another layer of calming aromas to take me off to dreamland.   If it has been an exceptionally busy day, I will add doTERRA’s Serenity® Restful Complex and a Copaiba Softgel to help support a restful night.  Feel free to reach out to me for my favorite essential oils for calming the mind, relaxation, and sleep!

Let’s move on to the Family Room.  Next to the kitchen, this area of our home gets a lot of traffic.  Having a peaceful, clean, and homey area is perfect for unwinding.

  • Fresh Air! If you live in a place where you can open your windows, do!  Let the clean fresh air in every once in a while to get the air circulating.  Did you know that indoor air can be more toxic than the great outdoors?  There are so many products in our homes that produce an off-gas and that is coupled with synthetic candles and wall plug-ins can make our indoor environment less than healthy.   I know, I had candles burning, and fragrant wall plug-ins in almost every room.  Oh, heavens!  I had no idea that these chemicals disrupted my hormones and inflamed my respiratory system.
  • Add a diffuser and essential oils to help filter the air, boost your immune system, and add tranquil aromas to make your home more zen-like. Feel free to contact me for my favorite diffuser blends to promote a restful environment, air cleansing, and immune-boosting benefits.

Let’s move on to our workspace or home office. Whether you work from home full-time or occasionally need a quiet place to think, the setup of your home office can either make or break your productivity. Sometimes a home office is a quiet, dedicated room designed for getting work done. Other times, it is a desk in the corner of the kitchen that may not lend itself to good concentration. Either way, there are plenty of things you can do to make your office space more conducive to being productive.

First, look at the aesthetic. What kinds of things are on the walls? Do you have motivational posters, quotes, your favorite painting, or something that will help foster creativity?

Studies show that when we’re in an aesthetically pleasing environment with bright colors and inspiring visuals, it can actually help us to be more creative and productive. So, if your office space lacks personality, it might be time to frame your favorite quote or create a dream board or inspirational collage to help you get the creative juices flowing.

Next, look at the space, is it clean? With everything going on in life, it’s not always easy to keep your work areas clean, but a cluttered mind can have a hard time concentrating. You may need to invest in a filing cabinet or decorative storage bins; make sure that you can keep your desk clear, which will help you keep your mind clear.

Here’s a tip. Make sure you always have a notebook or sticky note as a permanent fixture in your office. That way, when you have a brilliant idea, you can write it down before you forget it. Sticky notes can also be helpful reminders or useful for writing down information if you spend a lot of time on the phone.

Once your home office is clean, has a little personality, and feels more organized, you’re ready to take your space to the next level by cultivating an atmosphere where you can feel productive.  Of course, add a diffuser with uplifting and focus blends to fill your space with supportive aromas for the ultimate workspace!

I do my best to keep my space clean and organized.  If I have a cluttered desk and office, then I’m unable to focus and create awesome blogs, newsletters, or social media posts.  It’s therapeutic for me to clean and organize while I come up with content to share with all of you!  Feel free to contact me for my favorite aromas to add to your creative space.

Diffusing Tips

I think you know by now just how much I love diffusers. Diffusing dōTERRA® pure essential oils is the easiest way to transform any room. Not only does using an essential oil diffuser allow you to create any kind of atmosphere that you like, but it is also a better, natural alternative to using candles, air fresheners, or plug-ins. Using an essential oil diffuser is an effective, non-toxic way to bring your favorite aromas into any room of your home.

I’ve talked a lot about diffusing essential oils, but if you’ve never used a diffuser, don’t worry! It’s easy. Here’s how it works:

First, pick an essential oil. If you want to freshen the air in the room, pick a refreshing essential oil. If you’re trying to create a calming atmosphere at bedtime, choose an oil with a soothing aroma. When you want to bring energy or cheerfulness into the room, choose an oil with an uplifting aroma.

Next, add water to your diffuser and a few drops of the essential oil you chose.

Finally, replace the lid, turn on the diffuser, and enjoy!

It only takes a few seconds to transform any room in your home with a diffuser and your

favorite essential oils.

Essential oil diffusers can be useful in virtually any room of the house.

  • Freshen the bathroom by placing a diffuser on the counter.
  • A diffuser on your bedside table in your bedroom can help you create a restful environment.
  • Putting a diffuser on the kitchen table or countertop can help you counteract foul odors and make the kitchen a more pleasant space.
  • Diffusing essential oils in the entryway or family room can make your home more inviting for anyone who walks through the door.

When it comes to diffusing, the possibilities are truly endless.

When you’re ready to start diffusing, you’ll want the right essential oils on hand. dōTERRA has curated the Aroma Essentials Collection for this very reason. Any of the powerhouse oils and blends in this collection will make it easy to diffuse essential oils in any room and transform the way your home feels.
